Window Rock School District governing board wins award
Navajo-Hopi Observer

The Arizona School Boards Association presented the governing board of Window Rock Unified School District with the Total Boardsmanship Award Dec. 12 during its annual conference in Phoenix.

The award recognizes governing boards when at least a quorum of members attain the level of "Certification of Boardsmanship." This recognition is awarded to governing boards that have demonstrated a high level of boardsmanship skills and knowledge.

The association is a private non-profit organization dedicated to promoting elected local governance of public education and student success by providing leadership and assistance to governing boards statewide.

Dr. Deborah Jackson-Dennison, superintendent of Window Rock Unified School District, commended the governing board for its recognition.

"Congratulations to the governing board of Window Rock Unified School District, they are much-deserving of this award," Dennison said. "This governing board is a working board-they care about student achievement and student success. Student learning is their first priority and they make data-driven decisions to improve our schools."

Recently, the governing board helped align curriculum, instruction and assessment components to higher criterion-based standards known as the National Common Core Standards. This was an effort to come into compliance with Arizona's adoption of the A-F Letter Grade Accountability System in 2011.

Window Rock High School is the highest performing Arizona public school on the Navajo Nation. Window Rock High School students also scored higher than the county and state averages on the Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards.
