WINSLOW, Ariz. - Incoming ninth Grade Winslow High School students attending the Summer Bridge Program are applying their math skills to analyze the skate park ramps at the new skate park located across the street from the high school.

The students recently strengthened their proportional relationship skills in the class room. Outside, the students gather measurements necessary for them to determine the slope of the ramps. The students were met with the challenge to determine if mathematics could shed any light on how steep one ramp is compared to another, when simply riding them is a subjective guess.

The students worked to graph proportional relationships, interpret the unit rate as the slope of the graph and compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, the students compared a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed.
