Winslow Bulldogs win two, lose one in Pepsi Tournament in Flagstaff

The Winslow Bulldogs won two games and lost one at the Pepsi Invitational Tournament in Flagstaff last weekend.

The Bulldogs bested the Kingman Bulldogs 57-36 in their opening game on Thursday. The Bulldogs lost to the Copper Canyon Aztecs 58-46 on Friday and topped the Coconino Panthers 57-52 in their final game on Saturday. The results left Winslow with an 8-4 record for the season.

In the 57-36 win over Kingman, Winslow led 17-12 after the first quarter and had a commanding 30-16 lead at the half. The margin was 48-31 after three quarters. Stevin Nelson led all scorers with 22 points for Winslow. Keenan Keams was also in double figures for Winslow with 10 points. Ethan Adams scored 12 points and Claylee Comins scored 10 points for Kingman.

In the 58-46 loss to Copper Canyon, the Aztecs led 11-10 after the first quarter and 23-20 at the half. The margin was a still close 40-34 after three quarters, but Copper Canyon hit seven of 10 free throws in the fourth period to pull away.

The Aztecs converted 15 of 26 charity shots in the game while Winslow made seven of 11. Trey McCray of Copper Canyon led all scorers with 16 points and Dontay Hamilton was also in double figures for the Aztecs with 12 points. Trelonnie Sanders paced the Bulldogs with 14 points. Trevor Begay was also in double figures with 11 points and Vincenzio Sells scored nine for Winslow.

In the 57-52 win over Coconino, the Bulldogs trailed 18-4 after the first quarter and 27-16 at the half. Coconino still led 44-31 after three quarters of play, but the Bulldogs came back with a 19-7 advantage in the fourth quarter to force a tie. The Bulldogs outscored the Panthers 6-1 in the overtime period to take the win.

Milland Thomas led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 19 points. Sanders was also in double figures for Winslow with 14 points. Donovan Warren led Coconino with 14 points. Matthew Begay was also in double figures for the Panthers with 11 points.

Free throw shooting in the overtime period was key to the Winslow win. The Bulldogs converted eight of 10 charities in that period, while Coconino scored one of two. For the game Winslow scored eight of 15 while Coconino scored 11 of 19.

The Bulldogs were slated to play the Chinle Wildcats on Tuesday at Chinle. They will complete the 2013 portion of their season in the Tournament of Champions at Chinle Dec. 26-28.
