Navajo Department of Emergency Management urges Reservation agencies to apply for financial help

MENTMORE N.M. - The deadline to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) money to help repair damage as a result of a severe freeze in December 2012 on the Navajo Nation is April 27.

Officials with the Navajo Department of Emergency Management (NDEM) said all Navajo Nation local tribal government agencies, Chapter Houses, eligible private non-profits including tribal enterprises that sustained costs or damages related to the freeze between Dec. 15 and Jan. 21 must submit an application to be considered for federal-tribal financial reimbursements.

The Request for Public Assistance can be submitted by contacting the Navajo Nation Emergency Operations Center at (505) 371-8411/8415/8416.

President Barack Obama approved Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly's request for federal assistance. FEMA administers the program, which helps reimburse costs associated with the repair, restoration, reconstruction or replacement of public facilities damaged or destroyed on a Federal-Tribal cost-share basis.
