Highways in White Mountains closing for winter
State Route 273 to remain open between State Route 260 and Sunrise Park
Navajo-Hopi Observer

SHOW LOW, Ariz. - Annual winter season road closures will start to affect drivers traveling through Arizona's high country beginning Nov. 15.

Select highways in the White Mountains are closed each winter because of the significant amount of snowfall the area usually receives. The highways are reopened in the spring, usually around mid-April, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

The following highways in the White Mountains are scheduled to close soon:

• State Route 473 to Hawley Lake will close tomorrow;

• State Route 261 between Big Lake and State Route 260 will close Dec. 17; and

• State Route 273 between Sunrise Park and Big Lake will close Dec. 17.

The portion of SR 273 between SR 260 and Sunrise Park will remain open to provide access to the ski area.

ADOT could close roads earlier if heavy snowfall occurs in the area prior to the closure date.

ADOT recommends driving slowly during hazardous weather conditions and carrying snow chains and cables. Snowy conditions require that drivers leave more space between vehicles.

Information on the latest highway conditions around the state is available from the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov.
